Australian National Library.

Also back in January 2023, whilst in Canberra I took the opportunity to visit the National Library.

Just before I continue, one thing you must do is join the Australian National Library before you visit as it will make your life so much easier to access different records etc. It is a fairly easy process and your library card will be delivered via post. Note: If you do not intend to visit, you will not need a card.

What an amazing building and of course, an amazing amount of resources for genealogy. The staff are also extremely helpful especially if you need any assistance.

Just remember you cannot take any bags etc. into the library. There are lockers provided. You need to find an empty locker, enter your code, place your bag and the items you don’t need inside and close the door. Remember to go collect your things when done – oh, and don’t forget your code!

This was my locker during my visit.

Books.

Like most libraries, it is always a good opportunity to explore and discover. You never know what you may find. The National Library has a variety of books which are useful in your family history research. I found some interesting bits and pieces about my ancestors. It also adds to the context of their story. I spent most of the afternoon in the Library.

Website.

I have provided the link for the National Library and is as follows:

https://www.nla.gov.au/

From the website’s main page, have a look around, especially the following links:

At Home.

You can access most of the available information from your own home via the Internet. I find that seeing and handling a book is so much better than viewing information on a screen. I’m probably old school but I do find it more enjoyable.

Other Libraries.

Regarding libraries in general for doing your research, go check out the local libraries. They hold a wealth of information, especially relating to the local area. Again, you just never know what you may find to add context to your ancestor stories.

Check out the library website especially if you cannot get to a library in the area where your ancestors once lived. You could be lucky to locate some information that’s available online. Again, you just never know what you may find. Planning is the key!

Extras.

During my own research, I have also checked out local museums. Sometimes they are attached to the library or just nearby. They can provide an insight into “how things used to be.” Just remember that visiting the various locations can take you on a memory trip.
