Since all my ancestors arrived in Australia, well actually, in Queensland, the State Library was a good place to start to find answers to my research questions. The Library is full of extremely useful records, books and maps. I think like most of us when we do our research, we tend to overlook maps. Maps are an extremely useful resource. This may be the subject of another writing in the future.
Question?
I visited the Queensland State Library, in Brisbane, at the end of September 2023 and had an amazing time researching.

Things to remember when doing any type of research, have a research question or many just in case. I spent two days at the library and still didn’t complete my list of questions – another visit is pending.
Pencil.
Please remember that you can only use a pencil when you go to the library especially when you are doing research. Also, note you cannot take your bags into the rooms.

Lockers are provided so they are safe to be left with the staff who place them in a locker behind reception.
Membership.
One of the issues, I had to start with was becoming a member. I checked out the library website and it stated you do need to be a resident of Queensland. I currently do not live in Queensland so there’s a problem. Seems to be an online library thing. After speaking to the friendly staff this resident situation was resolved on the first day I visited. I am now a member and can get access to a lot of information online when at home. In saying that it’s not the same as actually visiting the library.
The staff were extremely helpful in both areas I visited over the two days that I was there. All staff members seem to have an interest in family history. They also showed interest in what I was attempting to achieve during my visit. I found this very rewarding and thanked the staff for their assistance.
Website.
I have provided the Queensland State Library’s website: https://www.slq.qld.gov.au/

The location of the Library is at Stanley Place, South Brisbane.
Rabbit Holes.
Like any research, you can resolve an issue but you can, at times, create more questions. The way I research is thorough and I don’t like to leave any stone unturned. Things to be wary of are the rabbit holes and how far you go down them.
Bookshop.
On site there is a bookshop – yes, I made a purchase. There is also a lovely café which does get busy. I had lunch there both days, mostly as it was convenient. It also allowed me time to collect my thoughts concerning my research.
Motto.

Again, my motto…
Go explore and discover,
You never know what you may find.
