Hints & Tips.

Since we have been checking out YouTube, let us look at those who have genealogical channels that provide a variety of hints and tips to assist with our research.

Bias.

Please note: I live in Australia. I have mostly English and Scottish ancestry with a hint of Prussian. Most of the YouTube is have a USA bias. I have only found a small handful of channels that are useful.

Comments.

In saying that, I follow very few since my time is a valuable resource. My comments here are mine alone.

These have come about from my experiences when I have viewed, subscribed and commented on within this particular journey. I am yet to find a good YouTube with Australian content that is of interest.

If you know of any, please make a comment.

Caution.

Be aware not to take everything you hear or read as correct. Remember, the YouTuber is providing information from their own experiences. This may not “fit” your purpose.

From my experience, I have come across some who have no idea and provide incorrect information. Like everything to do with any type of research always double-check the information before diving in head first.

With the introduction of AI influencing content please do your own checks.

Downside.

Again, my own opinion may vary from your own, so you really need to decide for yourself. The thumbnails used mostly do not provide good information. They are there so you will click on that thumbnail. This means the YouTuber gets a click when you enter the video before you even know if the content is of interest to you. As I have said previously, a lot of the content has a USA bias – there are more people in the audience there who may get value from the content.

Follow.

You can subscribe to the channel and follow the presenter. From here you may be interested in receiving emails from the presenter which may provide additional information to assist with your own research. Remember all YouTube channels are there to make money, so please be aware.

Subscribed.

I have provided a short list of who I currently follow. These are:

1. Genealogy TV (Hosted by Connie Knox)

2. Genealogy with Amy Johnson Crow

3. Family History Fanatics

As previously stated, I follow very few channels as my time is a precious resource. I do receive emails from a couple of those mentioned above which I have found useful. Disclaimer: the channels are not aware of my “promotion”. I have not reached out to them to advise them of this fact.

Emails.

I am writing this at the beginning of February 2024 and refer to two emails received from Amy.

1. Questions help fuel our genealogy research.

2. What if I make a mistake in my genealogy?

Both emails are a short read. Within both emails, there are links to Amy’s blog posts which again are interesting reads.

Takeaways.

  • Your time is valuable.
  • Subscribe to the channel. You can always unsubscribe later.
  • Do your own research.
  • Look out for other channels of interest.

Remember, it’s all about you.
