I am sure everyone has heard the saying “You can pick your friends but you cannot pick your family.” Well, this is partly true… However, out there in the universe, someone decides which “family” you get allocated to. Why? Well, we all have lessons to be learnt. Of course, some will disagree with this and everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
Families.
Now, what does our family have to teach us?

This is an extremely difficult question to answer. However, in one’s current family, you may be aware of different dynamics, traits and, shall we say, unusual behaviours. Before diving in on the deep end, start with you. What characteristics/behaviours do you have? Where do you think these came from? Maybe, a parent, grandparent or would you think they came from someone more distant? Do not forget that just looking at your direct line may not have the answer. Siblings do play a big role in our development.
Other things to consider: an only child, the eldest, the youngest, even the middle child, and then there is the only female or male child in a family. And of course, the age difference between siblings. All these factors play out in the family sagas. Oh, and don’t forget the favourite child and the favourite aunt or uncle.

Ponder.
Go within and ponder your family. Remember, it doesn’t just include your immediate family but the extensions of it, as mentioned above. To begin to understand one’s family sagas look inward. Discover what you may already know about yourself. Always know that you hide from those traits you never want to admit to. Be truthful to yourself. There is good and not-so-good within all of us. Once the admissions have been made, one will have a much better understanding and knowledge of who one really is. This process may take time but it is worth it in the end.
List.

So, what now? Take a broader look at your immediate family. Make a list of each person’s beliefs, traits etc.. Note: This list is about your thoughts on those around you. You may be afraid to admit to yourself what your truth is about those you love dearly or maybe, not so dearly. Again, this process may be difficult. It may be upsetting. But remember, some people will never change but you can, once you know what you know. Now go look in a mirror!
Who are you?
All families are different but the same no matter what one may believe. Time changes, as do situations. What annoys you about yourself, may be a positive through the eyes of others. Look at who you know. Understand those from your past, we are considering our ancestors here, as they would have influenced you in some way. We are all learning throughout our life. Researching our ancestors is no mean feat. So, you are a detective, an adventurer, and an explorer. Are these things on your list? If not they should be.

Good, Bad, Ugly.
Families are made up from the good, the bad and the ugly. Remember, love them all, no matter how hard it may be. Why would you look into family sagas? It all helps with writing your story and your ancestors. This process can add context to a story.
