Places.

When we commence our journey on discovering our ancestors, we never really know where we may go in the world. The basics, as we step out are fairly easy and straightforward, since we begin with ourselves and our parents or in some cases just a parent.

Journey.

During the journey, Do we think about all the places we find? To know more details about them? If not, why not? All of these places have a history. Do you look into this history? I have and it is always interesting to know about each place. Living in Australia, the history of places is much less, in comparison to locations abroad, and therefore easier to sort through.

History.

When looking at these places especially abroad, you can compile a basic summary about these places, like when the place was founded etc. You will get an understanding of who may have been in control of the place at different times in its history. I am sure you get the idea. All of this allows context to be added to our ancestors’ stories.

Discovery.

As you discover more about a place, look further into its history, especially around the times when your ancestor lived there. What did you find? If you answer nothing, Then you need to look further. You can find information from a variety of sources, e.g. newspapers. Other places you can look, especially in our online activities are local libraries, local historical organisations, and even local family history societies. All of these places have a wealth of information.

Background.

Once you get background details, ask yourself why did your ancestor leave a place or move elsewhere in the world? What was happening around that time? What changes occurred? Once you get to this point, you can create context to add to your stories. It is an amazing adventure. With what is available online, you may even be able to visit the location virtually –  now, that can be fun.  Understand that places do change. What you see today, would have been very different to say back in 1798! Just remember that.

Focal Point.

Parish churches and graveyards were a focal point of our ancestors’ lives. These places were the focal point of a village. So much is to be found in these locations. Maps are also very useful. You can get an idea of where places were within a village. Once you start this adventure, it will not stop.

I have had the opportunity to visit many locations where my ancestors once lived, played and died. Now, that is truly an adventure in itself.

Storyteller.

Remember, our family history is more than names, dates and places. Combining it all creates a history. This history now needs to be attached to your ancestors. You have become the storyteller.
