Always a Dreamer.

I believe we are all Dreamers. In my own childhood, I remember dreaming about a multitude of “things” I wished to do or achieve. Did these all come true? Probably not…

USA Travel.

One I do remember, that did many years later come true, was about being in Philadelphia, USA on 4 July 1976. I may have mentioned this before… Do you remember any of your “younger” dreams you had, that worked out?  Please feel free to drop me a comment.

Shuffling.

As I write this, my mind is shuffling through my many thoughts to see what comes up. As you know, I have written about the voyages of my ancestors to Queensland, Australia. Before I knew anything, I had often dreamt about these journeys. I asked many questions. I now know a lot more. I will never know the full extent of what my ancestors were expecting on their journey nor what their life would be like once they arrived here.

Pondering.

We will never know what thoughts our ancestors had. What were their dreams? Leaving their familiar surroundings and heading into the unknown.

All we can do is research newspapers from the day to get a glimpse of life back then. Have you been pondering on what happened to your ancestors who made various choices that set you up in the life you have now?

Fly on the Wall.

There is that old saying: “if only we were a fly on the wall.” What would we have seen or heard?

There are many situations that may have occurred ranging from sadness to utter happiness.

We just think about our own day to day lives to get the ideas.

Dreaming can be a godsend and give us hope for a brighter future…

Choice.

I look at all my direct ancestors and wonder what choices they made to get us here.

When looking at all of this there would have been so many decisions made. We can only think of all these choices to end where we are now.

It is very difficult to calculate how many choices were made. Actually, the number would most likely be thousands and thousands.

Weather.

One huge factor that influenced the lives of our ancestors was the weather.

The majority of my ancestors came from the UK. The wet, dull, dark days of the winter which usually involved snow at times.

In contrast, the winters in the Queensland tropics were completely different –  as in no snow, but droughts and flooding rains being the issue.

Now & Then.

It’s things like I’ve mentioned about that in this day and age we take for granted.

We want light to fill our home in the night. We flick a switch and, hey presto we have light.

Our ancestors most likely would not have had this luxury –  kerosene lanterns, come to mind.

Stories.

When writing our ancestors’ stories, think about their dreams and aspirations. The hardships they may have encountered.

As I’ve already mentioned, use newspapers to add the context to these stories.

You will be writing a compelling story and not just names, dates, and places.
